A German Cathedral city and Spa in North
Rhine/Westphalia,it was the Roman city of
Aquisgranum. The German Emperors were crowned
there until 1531 in the Cathedral,founded by
Charlemagne in 796.
Aachen, or Aix-la-Chapelle, city has a
population of 243,000. It is an industrial
centre producing mainly textiles and
machinery. Its mineral baths have been
famous since roman times. In 936-1531 the
city was the coronation place of German
kings. In 1801 it was taken by France and in
1815 Prussia. It was the first major German
town captured by the Allies in WORLD_WAR_II,
two thirds of it were destroyed during the
occupation.
