  1. A German Cathedral city and Spa in North
  2. Rhine/Westphalia,it was the Roman city of
  3. Aquisgranum. The German Emperors were crowned
  4. there until 1531 in the Cathedral,founded by
  5. Charlemagne in 796.

  7. Aachen, or Aix-la-Chapelle, city has a
  8. population of 243,000. It is an industrial
  9. centre producing mainly textiles and 
  10. machinery.  Its mineral baths have been
  11. famous since roman times.  In 936-1531 the
  12. city was the coronation place of German
  13. kings.  In 1801 it was taken by France and in
  14. 1815 Prussia. It was the first major German
  15. town captured by the Allies in WORLD_WAR_II,
  16. two thirds of it were destroyed during the
  17. occupation.
